Why Did You Get into Real Estate?
Hi, it’s Jack Anthony with Jack Anthony Consulting. Today, we’re going to delve into a specific question. I’ll tell you why I got into real estate, but more importantly: Why did you?
Hi everyone, I want to start today with a question we don’t ask ourselves nearly often enough in this industry: Why did you get into real estate? Well, I know why I got into it.
As I was finishing college, I was just coming off an athletic scholarship. I started interviewing for jobs to see what kind of income I could generate. I had a specific picture in my mind of what I wanted: an apartment in Westwood, California, near UCLA, and a Porsche. Well, when I started interviewing, guess what? I wasn’t going to be making the kind of income right out of college that would get me those things. But here’s the 3rd Porsche that I have owned since then.

At the same time, I saw some other guys who were my age—or just a little older—who didn’t go to college, yet they were driving around in Cadillacs and Mercedes. I thought, “What the heck? What are they doing?”
The answer: Real estate.
5 Common Reasons People Enter the Industry
Usually, there are about five different reasons people get into real estate:
-
A Love for Homes: Maybe you just love houses and enjoy looking at different architecture and properties.
-
A People Person: Maybe you like dealing with people. You want to be involved in their goals and the transitions of their lives as they start new chapters.
-
No Degree Required: Perhaps you were looking for a path that didn’t require a four-year college degree—something where you could start and grow a business without a formal education.
-
Income Potential: You saw the potential for income generation. You can set your own schedule, you have no boss, and there is no ceiling. You can make as much money as you want through hard work.
-
The “Easy Money” Myth: Let’s be honest—you thought, “Hey, this is easy. These guys don’t work that hard, and look at all the money they make!” That’s exactly what I thought when I was looking at this as a potential career.
From Job to Business
If you’re still watching, you might be saying, “Yeah, some of those things are true, and that’s why I got in.” But we all eventually realize that the “unlimited easy money” part is a myth. It requires a significant amount of hard work to generate that kind of income.
There is a dividing line in our industry. There are those who look at it as a job, and those who look at it as a business. If you want to be in this for the long term, you need to build a reputation and a brand. You have to treat it like a business.
Running a business means more than just showing up to closings, showing houses, and putting up lockboxes. It means you must have goals and systems. In my experience dealing with many different agents, I find those two things are rarely clear. Their goals aren’t defined, and more importantly, their systems for reaching those goals don’t exist.
Let’s Build Your System
That’s where I come in. I can help you develop the goals and systems necessary to reach your targets over time. If you’re in it for the long haul, we should talk. I’ve been in sales and real estate for over 45 years, so I’ve got quite a bit of knowledge under my belt.
By all means, give me a call. I’m happy to talk, and I will answer the phone.
